Drew Brees and the Saints extended New Orleans’ post-Super Bowl euphoria for at least another week and handed Brett Favre a second straight loss in the Louisiana Superdome. Brees completed 27 of 36 passes for 237 yards and one touchdown, and the Saints survived a hard-fought season opener for a 14-9 victory Thursday night.

Two people with knowledge of the contract say Tom Brady has agreed to a four-year extension that would make him the NFL’s highest paid player. The extension for the New England Patriots quarterback begins in 2011 at an average of $18 million per year with a total of $48.5 million guaranteed, one of those persons said.

The Green Bay Packers signed cornerback Charles Woodson to a contract extension through the 2014 season on Thursday, a deal that will likely allow the 2009 AP Defensive Player of the Year to retire as a Packer. The 33-year-old Woodson signed a five-year contract that is worth as much as $55 million, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press.

Saints lead Vikes 14-9 after 3rd quarter (AP)

The New Orleans Saints — the top offense in the league last year — had just enough in Thursday’s opener against the Minnesota Vikings to take a 14-9 lead after three quarters. Drew Brees, who drove the Saints 77 yards to open the game, started the third quarter with a 74-yard scoring drive to regain the lead.

Brett Favre’s 20-yard touchdown pass to Visanthe Shiancoe late in the second quarter gave the Minnesota Vikings a 9-7 lead over the New Orleans Saints in Thursday night’s season opener. Favre was 11 of 15 for 127 yards in the first half after going 2 of 4 for 22 yards in the first quarter. Favre drove the Vikings 64 yards on five plays for the go-ahead score.

Saints cornerback Tracy Porter got a Spider-Man haircut

Tracy Porter showed up for the inaugural game of the 2010 NFL season in style. The New Orleans Saints cornerback was sporting a Spider-Man-inspired hairdo for the season opener against the Minnesota Vikings:

Either that’s the greatest haircut I’ve ever seen or the weirdest case of male-pattern baldness. Check out the craftsmanship on the cut. The fade in each ring of the web, the precision in the supporting lines, the exact placement of the center of the head. Charlotte herself couldn’t have done any better. 

It’s not Porter’s first haircut shout-out to fictional suffixed males. In the NFC Championship game, the cornerback sported a Pac-Man ‘do.
